Special Facade Grant Program 2021

Shenandoah, PA -- Downtown Shenandoah, Inc (DSI) recently announced a Special Facade Improvement Grant Program. Thanks to funding received from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, this grant is dedicated to improving storefronts and curb appeal along the Shenandoah Main Street Business District.

Applications will be accepted for any commercial property within the designated boundaries of the Main Street Business district defined as Main Street between Washington Street south to Laurel Street, and Centre Street between Jardin Street east to White Street. DSI will accept applications through June 30, 2021.

Facade guidelines are established to encourage commercial property owners and businesses to restore the outside appearance of their building while maintaining the building's historical and architectural character. "Improving storefronts and curb appeal will attract more visitors and foot traffic to our area," said Susan Williams of DSI.
"Shenandoah is the home of Mrs. T's Pierogies, famous for their kielbasi shops, has wonderful restaurants, unique retail establishments, professional/medical services, and is part of the state's WalkWorks Program. Shenandoah is also the future site of The Center for Education, Business and The Arts (CEBA) that will begin construction in 2022."

Shenandoah, PA Special Facade Grant ProgramAll facade applications must be approved by the DSI Board of Directors and the Shenandoah Borough Management. No applications will be approved if any Shenandoah Code or ordinance violations exist."A set of guidelines are available for Shenandoah businesses to review," explained Williams. "This grant is extremely generous but in order to receive funding, a detailed overview of the project must be submitted and approved before any work is started on the facade.

She continued to explain that when the project is completed, all receipts and the contractor's itemized invoice must be submitted before the grant is awarded. DSI will pay the contractor 90 percent up to $9,000 for a front facade and 90 percent up to $18,000 for a corner facade.

"DSI is committed to revitalizing Shenandoah and Schuylkill County. This Special Facade program is part of our continuing efforts to work collaboratively with state and local government officials and community members to improve the economic landscape in our area, said Williams.
